McKayla earned her B.A. in English from The College of William and Mary and studied in the Master of Fine Arts - Poetry program at San Diego State University, where she taught an undergraduate rhetoric and writing class, led poetry workshops with Poetic Youth, and worked with the literary magazine Poetry International. She's completing her M.F.A. at The College of Charleston. 

we carry the sky is McKayla's first poetry collection; it has been featured on PBS Newshour and listed as one of Bustle's 2017 "9 Feminist Poetry Collections to Read for National Poetry Month." She is a regular contributor to Of the Wolves, and her writing has previously been published in The San Diego Poetry Annual, Charleston Magazine, The James Island Messenger, and Winged Nation.
